1.5.1  Special equipment to be carried

All aircraft operating within BRATISLAVA FIR, whereby territory of the Slovak Republic is overflown, must adhere to the provisions detailed under the para. GEN 1.5.2.

1.5.2  Equipment to be carried by all types of flights

1.5.2.1  IFR flights
1.5.2.1.1 The following radio and navigation equipment must be carried on board the aircraft for commercial transport and for General Air Traffic (GAT) when  flying under IFR:
  1. aircraft other than state aircraft operating on the ATS routes within the BRATISLAVA FIR shall be equipped with, as a minimum, RNAV equipment meeting RNAV 5 in accordance with the requirements set out in ICAO Doc 7030 Regional Supplementary Procedures;

    Note 1: Acceptable means of compliance with the above mentioned requirement are set out in the EASA AMC 20-4 as amended.

    Note 2: The mandatory carriage of RNAV equipment is within BRATISLAVA FIR required on all RNAV routes and on other ATS routes above FL 125, except SID and STAR.

    Note 3: RNAV 5 is specification of area navigation, where expression 5 refers to the lateral navigation accuracy in nautical miles, which is expected to be achieved at least 95 % of flying time.

  2. two VHF transmitter/receiver sets operating in the frequency range 118,000 - 136,975 MHz with channel separation of 8,33 kHz, with a headphone set for each crew member;

    State aircraft not equipped with VHF transmitter/receiver operating with 8,33 kHz channel spacing shall be equipped with two UHF and/or VHF capable radio equipment with channel separation of 25 kHz; as indicated by ICAO Doc 7030/EUR, depending on used flight level.

    Note: Exemptions from mandatory carriage of 8,33 kHz equipment are described in section ENR, para. ENR 1.8.2.

  3. two VOR/ILS navigation receiver sets;

  4. one set of receiver of marker position indicator MKR;

  5. one set of Automatic Direction Finder (ADF) - (special requirement of the Žilina aerodrome - see Žilina AD);

  6. one set of DME interrogator;

  7. turbine airplanes other than state aircraft with MAX take-off weight over 5 700 kg or airplanes authorized to carry more than 19 passengers shall be equipped with ACAS II with software version 7.1 in accordance with the requirements of the Regulation (EU) No 1332/2011;

  8. except for state aircraft, all aircraft intending to conduct flight or a part of flight in the BRATISLAVA FIR within RVSM airspace (between FL 290 and FL 410 inclusive; see para. ENR 1.8.3.1), shall be compliance with the criteria of the RVSM Minimum Aircraft Systems Performance Specifications (RVSM MASPS), and shall be approved for RVSM operations.

    Note: RVSM approved aircraft are those aircraft for which the operator has obtained an RVSM approval, either from the state in which the operator is based, or from the state in which the aircraft is registered.

1.5.2.1.2 Requirements for FM interference immunity of airborne VHF receivers
1.5.2.1.2.1 Within BRATISLAVA FIR only aircraft equipped with VHF FM broadcast interference immune airborne receivers complying with ICAO Annex 10, Volume I, provisions 3.1.4 and 3.3.8 and Volume III, Part II, provision 2.3.3 are allowed to operate.
1.5.2.1.2.2 State aircraft which do not comply with the requirements stated above can be operated in accordance with the following:
  1. en-route flights: the aircraft have to be equipped with suitable navigation equipment capable to meet RNP 5 without the use of VOR;

  2. when flying in TMA to selected RWY (see note 1) it is possible to take ILS CAT I approach procedure; in other cases the use of NDB (if NDB procedure is published) or visual approach is recommended.

    Note 1: Based on FM compatibility analysis the following RWY are considered as "selected":

    1. Bratislava/M. R. Štefánik Aerodrome (LZIB) - RWY 31,

    2. Košice Aerodrome (LZKZ) - RWY 01,

    3. Piešťany Aerodrome (LZPP) - RWY 01.

    4. Žilina Aerodrome (LZZI) - RWY 06,

    5. Poprad-Tatry Aerodrome (LZTT) - RWY 27.

    Note 2: Pilots can expect radar vectoring for ILS or NDB approach.

1.5.2.1.2.3 Pilots are requested to inform ATS unit on radio contact or CARO through the post-flight information on any FM interference detected.
1.5.2.2 VFR flights

Except for airspace class G* all VFR flights within BRATISLAVA FIR shall be equipped with one VHF transmitter/receiver set operating in frequency range 118,000 - 136,975 MHz with channel separation of 8,33 kHz, with a headphone set for each crew member.

*The exception does not apply to airspace class G portions, where radio mandatory zones (RMZ) are established.

1.5.2.3 Equipment of aircraft with SSR transponder
1.5.2.3.1 Except for VFR flights in airspace class G* shall be all flights in BRATISLAVA FIR equipped with SSR transponder capable to reply to Mode A interrogations on 4096 codes and with Mode C pressure-altitude reporting or transponder Mode S.

* Does not apply to parachute jumping flights.

Note: SSR transponder Mode S equipment is required under the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/1770.

1.5.2.3.2 Mode S - EHS (Enhanced Surveillance) is mandatory for all IFR flights within BRATISLAVA FIR for airplanes with MTOM exceeding 5 700 kg, or TAS exceeding 250 kt (463 km/h).
1.5.2.3.3 Mode S - ELS (Elementary Surveillance) is mandatory for these types of airplanes and helicopters:
  1. all VFR flights in airspace class C,

  2. all IFR flights with MTOM 5 700 kg or less, or TAS 250 kt (463 km/h) or less.

1.5.2.3.4 SSR transponder shall be operational in the Mode S or Mode C before aircraft‘s take-off.
1.5.2.3.5 Excemptions from the obligation of SSR transponder equipment
1.5.2.3.5.1 An exemption from mandatory carriage of SSR Mode A, C or S in CTR/TMA for VFR flights can be approved by respective ATC unit on crew‘s request prior to entering its area of responsibility.
1.5.2.3.5.2 IFR/GAT flights performed by state aircraft are exempted from the obligation to be equipped with SSR Mode S transponder according to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/1770 which fulfil the condition of being equipped with SSR transponder capable to reply to Mode A interrogations on 4096 codes and with Mode C pressure-altitude reporting.

Note 1: Operators of non-equipped state aircraft shall include the indicator SUR/EUADSBX or SUR/EUEHSX or SUR/EUELSX or a combination thereof, in Item 18 of the flight plan.

1.5.2.3.5.3 An exemption from Mode S - EHS for aircraft equipped with SSR Mode S transponder but where the avionics do not permit the extraction and transmission of the full set of required Downlink Aircraft Parameters (DAPs) can be approved by respective ATC unit on crew´s request prior to entering its area of responsibility.
